SF Fleet Week 2015 Background:
SAN FRANCISCO—The 35th Annual San Francisco Fleet Week celebration is set to kick off Mon. Oct. 5-12, 2015. More than 2,300 U.S. Marines and Sailors will join San Francisco-based U.S. Coast Guard during the 2015 Salute to our Sea Services.
“We are excited to bring back one of San Francisco’s oldest maritime traditions this year,” said Mayor Edwin M. Lee. “In the City that can, San Francisco’s Fleet Week is the only event in our country that combines the traditional air show and parade of ships with critical disaster response and emergency preparedness training to showcase our City’s and our residents’ resiliency.”
“San Francisco Fleet Week is a great opportunity to conduct joint military and civilian training programs,” said SF Fleet Week Chairman Major General Mike Myatt, USMC (ret). “The great celebrations happen while also focusing on unique training exercises and disaster preparedness discussions between our military and civic leaders. The partnership that Fleet Week has with the City of San Francisco is unparalleled.”
San Francisco Fleet Week, the SF Department of Emergency Management and the Port of San Francisco are partnering in a training exercise with the U.S. Navy on Mon. Oct. 5. The Rehearsal of Concept Drill will feature two civilian and two military disaster response vehicles as they are off-loaded from a U.S. Navy landing vessel adjacent to the Mariposa Yacht Club. Concurrently eight disaster response vehicles will load onto the Department of Transportation Maritime Administration (MARAD) M/V CAPE HUDSON docked at Pier 50. Immediately following the exercise, Mayor Edwin M. Lee will hold the 2015 SF Fleet Week press conference aboard the M/C CAPE HUDSON from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00pm to officially welcome the fleet to SF and kick-off the week’s festivities.
Six active naval vessels will be docked along the Port of San Francisco at SF Piers 15/17, 30/32 and 80 and will include four U.S. Navy ships including the USS SOMERSET LPD 25, USS CAPE ST. GEORGE CG 71, USS CORONADO LCS 4, USS STOCKDALE DDG 106, one Coast Guard Cutter, the USCGC BOUTWELL WHEC 719 and the Royal Canadian Naval vessel, HMCS CALGARY FFH 335.
The week-long event will also feature disaster capabilities, training exercises and senior leader talks, community relations projects, band concerts, ship tours, a parade of ships, veterans art show, MV-22 Osprey aviation demonstrations, and the popular Bark at the Park featuring military and civilian K-9 demonstrations in Duboce Park. New in 2015, the first SF Fleet Week Veterans Summit in partnership with Military.com and Vets in Tech will take place on Tues. Oct. 6 and the first SF Fleet Week Off the Grid Fleet Fest presented by Lyft, Oct. 10-11. The week’s events will be highlighted by the the Marina Green Humanitarian Assistance Village and signature SF Fleet Week Air Show featuring the Blue Angels Oct. 9-11. SF Fleet Week will conclude on Mon. Oct. 12 with the SF Fleet Week High School Band Challenge. All ships depart on Oct. 13.
